China hospital ship heads for typhoon-hit Philippines
A Chinese hospital ship set sail for the
typhoon-ravaged Philippines Thursday, with foreign media given
unprecedented access to a navy base as Beijing seeks to promote its aid
effort nearly two weeks after the disaster.
It is expected to take three or four days to reach the Philippines, which is embroiled in a territorial row with China.
"With our efforts, we will make great contributions to the relationship between the Chinese people and the Philippine people," Shen Hao, deputy chief of staff of the East China Sea Fleet and commander of the mission, told reporters allowed on board the vessel before it left.
"We will do our utmost to make contributions to the Philippine side."
The deployment of the ship, which was featured on the front page of China's state-run Global Times newspaper on Thursday, comes as the world's second-largest economy seeks to counter international criticism of its relief effort.
After an initial outlay of only $100,000, the Chinese government has gradually upped its aid over the past two weeks, contributing $1.6 million worth of tents, blankets and other supplies.
Other Chinese organisations are also contributing, and a first crew of relief workers left on Wednesday, China's foreign ministry said.
By contrast, Japan has contributed $30 million to the Philippines, and the US has donated $20 million. Even the Swedish furniture group Ikea's charitable foundation surpassed China's initial outlay with a $2.7 million contribution to the UN children's agency UNICEF.
There is no sign outside the navy base announcing its identity, and officials said it was the first time foreign journalists had been allowed inside.
Rows of uniformed navy officers and sailors lined the quayside alongside the white hospital ship, which was flanked by naval warships in the dock.
Medical personnel in blue camouflage uniforms waved from the Peace Ark's deck as it pulled away from port.
One sailor's wife clutched a Chinese flag and said: "I'm proud of my husband. It's OK for the ship to go to the Philippines despite the state of relations."
Shen said the ship had just returned from another humanitarian mission in October, and commanders had cut short a one-month maintenance period to send it to the disaster zone.
The Peace Ark will initially be stationed in Samar province, but how long it remains in the Philippines will depend on the situation, officials said.
Sun Tao, head of the ship's hospital, said it had more than 100 doctors and nurses on board, and can handle eight surgeries simultaneously.
Doctors expect to handle disease caused by insanitary conditions and paediatric cases, he added.
The ship is often featured in Chinese media and is a key instrument of "soft power" for Beijing, which regularly sends it to Asian and African ports to offer free operations.
Another batch of emergency medical rescuers left for the Philippines later Thursday, the official Xinhua news agency said, quoting local authorities.
A 50-strong team left from the city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, the report said, adding many of them had taken part in rescue work after the Sichuan earthquake in 2008.
They will establish a field hospital to offer medical services for typhoon survivors and work on disease prevention and control.
Typhoon Haiyan, which smashed through the central Philippines on November 8, was one of the most powerful storms ever recorded on land.
Around 5,500 people are dead or missing after the storm, which affected more than 13 million people, of whom 4.4 million are now homeless.

Nature of the Job:
The job of a millwright involves assembling and disassembling complicated machines and equipments. They are responsible for inspecting, installing dismantling and repairing the machineries
used in many industries. The job of a millwright starts when a machine
is delivered to the job site. They need to unload and inspect the

THROUGH A RAPIST’S EYES how to avoid?
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping,eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side,put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it’s better safe than sorry.

In 1971, Carolyn and Roger Perron move into a dilapidated old farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island with their five daughters. During the first day, the family moves in smoothly, though their dog, Sadie, refuses to enter the house and one of the daughters finds a boarded up entrance to a cellar.
The next morning, Carolyn wakes up with a mysterious bruise and to find Sadie lying dead outside the house. Over the next several days, various instances of paranormal activity occur. The activity culminates one night while Roger is away in Florida, as Carolyn is locked in the cellar while a spirit that looks like an elderly woman attacks one of her daughters.
Carolyn contacts noted paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren for help. The Warrens conduct an initial investigation and conclude that the house may require an exorcism, though this cannot be done without further evidence and authorization from the Catholic Church.
While researching the house's history, Ed and Lorraine discover that the house once belonged to an accused witch, Bathsheba, who tried to sacrifice her children to the devil and killed herself after cursing all who would take her land. The property was once 200+ acres but has since been divided up into smaller parcels. They find reports of numerous murders and suicides in houses that have since been built upon parcels that were once part of the property.
Ed and Lorraine return to the house in an attempt to gather evidence to receive authorization for an exorcism. One of the daughters sleepwalks into her sister's room and reveals a secret passage behind a wardrobe. Lorraine enters the passage and falls through the floorboards into the cellar, where she sees the spirits of people whom Bathsheba has possessed. All are mothers whom Bathsheba used to kill their children. Another of the Perron children is violently attacked and dragged along the floor by an unseen force.
Lorraine and Ed take their evidence to the Church to organize an exorcism while the Perron family takes refuge at a hotel. Ed and Lorraine's daughter is attacked in their own home by the spirits from the Perron house.
Carolyn, who was earlier possessed by the spirit of Bathsheba, takes two of her daughters, Christine and April, and drives back to the house. Ed, Lorraine, two of their assistants and Roger rush to the house where they find Carolyn trying to stab Christine. After subduing Carolyn, Ed decides to perform the exorcism himself, though Carolyn escapes and again attempts to kill her other daughter, April. Philippine ferry death toll climbs to 38 as oil leaks

Sunday in the grisly aftermath of a ferry disaster that claimed at least
38 lives, as oil leaked from the submerged vessel.
More than 800 passengers and crew were aboard the ferry, which sank within 10 minutes of impact.
"It is possible that there are air pockets in its compartments and there might be survivors," Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander Gregory Fabic told AFP, adding people could survive for 72 hours in such conditions.
"There is still hope that there might just be survivors there."
However by nightfall the navy and coastguard divers had not been able to reach the interior of the vessel, with strong currents and choppy waves hampering efforts, and only dead bodies from its outer areas had been recovered.
The official death toll rose from 31 in the morning to 38, and authorities cautioned that the odds of finding any more survivors were low.
"We are still hopeful, although you have to accept the reality that their chances of survival are very slim," Neil Sanchez, head of the regional disaster management office in Cebu, told reporters.
The number of people officially listed as missing was sharply reduced on Sunday to 82 from 170, but this was due to tallying issues rather than any fresh rescues.
The number of missing was cut after those involved in the search reconciled their figures, said Sanchez.
However authorities were unable to say how many people may be in the sunken ship, which is at a depth of about 30 metres (98 feet), giving some hope the number of missing could be reduced further.
Survivors and people with relatives still missing waited anxiously at the Cebu ferry passenger terminal and a local hospital for news of loved ones.
"I cannot explain what I am feeling. It is painful, but I continue to hope," said Nanette Condicion, 44, who survived by jumping on to the cargo ship but lost her elder sister and 71-year-old father in the chaos.
"I am staying here to wait for them, dead or alive. I am not going to leave unless I see both of them."
Meanwhile leaking oil from the vessel added a new front to the disaster response, spreading for more than five kilometres (three miles) and into coastal villages, fishing grounds and mangroves.
"You can see it coming out of the sunken vessel. It is bunker fuel and it is black," Cebu coastguard commander Weniel Azcuna told AFP.
At one area about five kilometres from the disaster site, mangroves were coated in black oil at low tide, and birds waded amid shallow water covered in a rainbow sheen, according to an AFP reporter.
Authorities said the ferry was carrying 120,000 litres (32,000 gallons) of bunker fuel when it sank. Divers were unable to reach the source of the leak to try and plug it.
The ships collided as they were travelling in opposite directions at a well-known choke point near the mouth of Cebu's port.
The steel bow of the cargo ship, Sulpicio Express 7, caved in on impact but it sailed safely to dock.
Officials said they suspected human error was to blame for one of the ships going into a wrong lane, although investigations had only just begun.
Ferries are one of the main forms of transport across the archipelago of more than 7,100 islands, particularly for the millions too poor to fly.
But sea accidents are common, with poor safety standards and lax enforcement typically to blame.
The world's deadliest peacetime maritime disaster occurred near the capital Manila in 1987 when a ferry laden with Christmas holidaymakers collided with a small oil tanker, killing more than 4,300 people.

Trainer Freddie Roach If Manny Pacquiao gets knocked out by Brandon Rios Pacman will retire
A familiar ritual is about to begin for Manny Pacquiao.
The Filipino superstar is about to embark on a promotional tour for his
next fight, a Nov. 24 match in Macau, China, against Brandon Rios.
Not long after, he'll begin training camp. It will be an important camp for Pacquiao, perhaps as important as any he's ever held.
It is no stretch to say that his career hangs in the balance.
Pacquiao is coming off back-to-back losses, to Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley Jr. He lost a hotly disputed decision to Bradley, but was knocked cold by Marquez in the sixth round of the fourth bout between them.
Roach expects a knockout in the Pacquiao-Rios fight and said if it is Pacquiao who winds up being KO'd, that will be the finale of a Hall of Fame career.
Many years ago, as the relationship between Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach grew closer, Pacquiao promised Roach he'd walk away from the game when his trainer told him it was time.
Roach said he would recommend retirement if Pacquiao were knocked out by Rios in their pay-per-view bout.
"It's over, 100 percent [if Pacquiao is knocked out by Rios]," Roach said. "We have a deal. When I tell him it's over, he'll say it's over and that's it. He's pretty loyal with his words and if that happens, it will be the end."
Roach, though, isn't expecting to have to make that call. Pacquiao hasn't shown the signs of decline that has led Roach to tell numerous other fighters, including James Toney and Bernard Hopkins, that it is time to step aside.
Pacquiao will be a few weeks shy of his 35th birthday when he steps into the ring to meet Rios. He's at an age where it is common for fighters to begin to slip, but Roach insists he's seen none of it.
"None whatsoever, and I'd tell you if I did," Roach said. "The thing is, people look at the losses and they think the reason is that he's getting old. That's not the case, not from what I see. Look, we all thought he beat Bradley, so throw that out. And in the Marquez fight, I thought he was doing well and was looking like he was going to win by knockout when he made a mistake and ran into a shot.
"That happens. That's boxing. It didn't happen because his skills aren't the same as they used to be. It happened because he made a mistake. It doesn't matter what age you are, you can make a mistake."
The losses have all but destroyed the dream of the one-time mega-fight between Pacquiao and unbeaten rival Floyd Mayweather Jr.
One of the reasons that the fight was so appealing from late 2009 until the loss to Bradley in mid-2012 was that the men were clearly the two best fighters in the world, in whichever order one ranked them. Their contrasting styles made for the kind of classic matchup that comes along once a generation.
The losses have changed that and rarely is the question about a fight between them asked any more. Roach, though, insists it should still be viewed as a possibility.
Roach is as blunt and honest a man as there is in boxing and he concedes that Mayweather has been creating distance between them.
"I think the gap is widening, I don't agree with that," Roach said. "But that being said, I've told Manny, 'Knock this guy [Rios] out in good fashion and the Mayweather fight comes back real quick.
"Manny still wants the fight. We know that Mayweather turned it down, but the truth is this: Mayweather has four fights left after this next one [on Sept. 14 against Canelo Alvarez] and I'm not sure there are four guys in the world left for him to fight without Manny Pacquiao being one of them.
"
So, essentially, it's a high-wire act for Pacquiao over the next few months. He needs to avoid being knocked out, but the type of fight he'll engage in with Rios will lend itself to a knock out.
Pacquiao is unquestionably the more skilled fighter, but when two men with knockout power are standing in front of each other and firing off shots, anything can happen.
It's a risk, though, Pacquiao is going to have to take.
And Roach is typically blunt about how he views Pacquiao at this stage.
"Manny needs to show me a little more," Roach said. "That's why I think a tremendous performance at this point will help a lot. We're at a crucial point in his career. I don't see that he looks like he's getting too old. His work ethic remains great. I'm his friend more than I'm his coach, and I'm not going to let anything happen.
"The minute I think he doesn't have it, when I see that he's not the Manny Pacquiao of old, I'll tell him that's it. I don't think he's at that point, and I think you'll see him look good in this one, but this is a very important fight for him."
